Micro-Inequities and Unconscious Bias in the Workplace

Micro-inequities are the ways in which individuals are singled out, overlooked, ignored or otherwise discounted, based on unchangeable characteristics such as race, gender or sexual orientation.  They generally take the form of gestures, different languagetreatment or even tone of voice.  When micro-inequities accumulate to block employees’ contributions and cause disengagement, they transcend the personal and become a major business issue.

We must discuss how to interrupt these barriers to inclusion and turn them into Macro-Affirmations – a small and brief interaction that makes people feel acknowledged and valued.
